Have a Sudden Long Distance Move for Work? What to Know First

by Alberto Williams

If your company has just informed you that you are relocating to another office location that is a long distance away, moving quickly and trying to make this sudden change in your life can be difficult. It can also get expensive. You'll want to talk with your employer and with some local moving companies to see how long this move will take and what the cost will be to get professional assistance. Do the following three things right away.

Negotiate the Move Cost with Your Company

If your company wants you to move, and you know it could cost thousands to pay for the move, ask the company to give you a moving allowance. Some companies will give it to you if you demand it, and then you won't have to pay the fees charged by the long distance moving company that will load up your stuff. You may get them to pay for at last half of the move. Full service moving, like the movers packing your items, may be something your employer doesn't want to pay for.

Get Three Quotes

Take the time to get at least three different quotes. When you compare the different quotes, ask about the charges for the following:

  • Loading and unloading
  • Packing
  • Boxes and moving supplies
  • Guaranteed moving time

One company's full service package could be very different from another company's idea for that package. You want to know exactly what you will get with each fee.

Figure out Storage Needs

Are there items that have to go into storage until you find a home in your new living location or until you have more space? If so, ask your company if they will pay for these costs that are a direct result of them asking you to move. You also need to know where the movers are taking your items and if it will cost more money to make multiple stops.

Moving with a short notice and having to go a long distance can cause a lot of problems when you're ready to move. There are so many different things to consider when you're getting ready to make the move, and hiring professionals could make everything go faster and without strain or hassle. Click to read and talk with the moving companies in your area to see who will negotiate the best deal with you for the project once you ask if your company can pay some of the costs.

About Me

Relocating My Family

I have always been one of those people who loves to explore new places, but a few years ago I realized that I was going to be moving in a big way. My company had recently relocated overseas, and it was really intimidating for me. I realized that we would be moving to Singapore, which was going to be a big change from what we were used to. I realized that I needed to start organizing my belongings so that the move was easier. I also worked to prepare my kids for the transition.
